Dressing a baby in India is completely different from dressing one in Europe. We have four extreme seasons, wild temperature swings between morning and afternoon, and humidity levels that make most synthetic fabrics unbearable. Getting clothing wrong causes heat rash, skin irritation, and a very unhappy baby.

The Golden Rule for Indian Baby Clothing

One layer more than you are wearing. If you're comfortable in a cotton t-shirt, baby needs a t-shirt plus a light muslin layer. In peak Indian summer above 35ยฐC, one layer of breathable cotton is enough. In an AC room, add a muslin swaddle. Never use synthetic fabrics - polyester traps heat and causes prickly heat rash within hours.

Fabric Guide for Indian Parents

100% Cotton - Best for Year-Round Indian Weather

Soft, breathable, absorbs sweat well. Ideal for daily wear in all seasons. Look for combed cotton (softer thread, smoother feel) over regular cotton. Thread count matters - cheap cotton feels rough on baby's delicate skin. Brands like Babyhug and Mothercare India use quality combed cotton.

Muslin - Best for Newborns and Summer Months

The most breathable fabric available - approximately 3ร— more breathable than regular cotton. Perfect for Indian summers and newborn skin. Muslin becomes softer with each wash, improving over time. Use as swaddle cloths, light onesies, and sleep sacks. Indian brands Bumzee and Little Surprise Box make excellent muslin baby clothing.

Organic Cotton - Best for Sensitive Skin

No pesticide residues, no harsh chemical dyes. Worth the premium for babies with eczema or frequently irritated skin. Look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification on the label - this is the only reliable organic textile certification.

Size Guide for Indian Babies

Indian babies tend to run smaller than European and American sizing charts assume. Use this as a guide (but always measure your baby's actual weight):

  • Newborn (NB): Up to 3.5kg - skip this size if baby is born over 3.5kg
  • 0-3M: 3-6kg ยท 3-6M: 6-8kg ยท 6-9M: 8-9.5kg ยท 9-12M: 9.5-11kg

Always size up if baby is at the top of a weight range - babies grow fast and an outfit that fits perfectly this week may be too small in 10 days.

What to Absolutely Avoid

  • Polyester / synthetic blends - trap heat, cause prickly heat rash in Indian summers
  • Tight elastic at wrists and ankles - marks and restricts circulation
  • Button-only closures - snaps and zips are life-savers during 2am changes
  • Complicated multi-layer outfits - you'll do 5+ outfit changes daily. Simplicity wins.
